Against the backdrop of these emerging intellectual property markets, in 2008 artists Eileen Simpson and Ben White embarked on a period of research in Amman, Jordan – speaking to lawyers, copyright activists, software developers, artists, musicians, journalists, curators, filmmakers and critics – in an attempt to seek out the common cultural resources of Jordan’s public domain. <br />

The result is ''Struggle in Jerash'' – a project convened around a lost 1957 Jordanian feature film of the same name, which fell out of copyright the year of the artists’ residency, and is used as a catalyst to explore value and meaning in archival material.<br />

Artists Eileen Simpson and Ben White re-animate ''Struggle in Jerash'' by appropriating the tactic of the commercial DVD director’s commentary, subverting its standard authorial voice and placing the audience at the centre of a copyright-expired film.<br />
<br />
In 2008, whilst on residency at Makan House in Amman, Jordan, the artists gained access to the last surviving copy of ''Struggle in Jerash'', a VHS transfer of the original 35mm film. Part 1950s gangster flick and part tourist documentary, the 1957 film is set in historical Jordan and Jerusalem and was produced by a self-organised group of aspiring filmmakers. <br />
<br />
The artists watched the film with Amman-based artists, curators, filmmakers and critics, inviting them to both translate and provide live commentary. Each session was recorded and edited to assemble a new multi-voiced soundtrack, creating a new film. A multiplicity of parallel commentaries emerge, anchored to the real-time of this remarkable footage of 1950s Jordan. As we are guided through the film, exclamations and reactions echo from one voice to another while laughter erupts and resonates across the composite group. Remarks on shifting borders, liberty, politics, everyday life, national identity, religion and cinema collide, forming an intricate discussion that reveals the discursive potential of the material. <br />
<br />
Although notorious as the country’s first feature, the original film has not until now been in general circulation. In deciding to redistribute the film, the artists make a reciprocal gesture, ensuring that they return the original film – and offer their new work – to the public sphere. <br />

Eileen Simpson and Ben White’s project takes as its starting point the Institute of Popular Music (IPM) Archive of over 80,000 records, an exceptional and rich research resource, gifted over a number of years by collectors and enthusiasts.<br />

With a particular focus on copyright-expired hit records from 1920s, 30s, 40s and 50s, the artists temporarily re-house the IPM archive in the public gallery - putting the archive on public view and making its contents available for public use. <br />

Eileen Simpson and Ben White’s project takes as its starting point the Institute of Popular Music (IPM) Archive of over 80,000 records, an exceptional and rich research resource, gifted over a number of years by collectors and enthusiasts.<br />

With a particular focus on copyright-expired hit records from 1920s, 30s, 40s and 50s, the artists temporarily re-house the IPM archive in the public gallery - putting the archive on public view and making its contents available for public use. <br />
<br />
The project explores ownership in the archive, investigating what is owned and how it is owned and promotes expanded usership of the archive through replay, live events, digitisation and distribution<br />
<br />
At the centre of the exhibition is a bespoke open source structure for archive digitisation, broadcast and remix performance, designed with 51 architecture. Animated by University of Liverpool students and graduates, the exhibition space is transformed into a production site where out-of-copyright sounds are ripped from archive records, to generate an [http://www.playitagainuseittogether.com evolving public resource]. This resource is used as material for a series of public events with invited guests and collaborators.<br />

Premonition 2037 (2016) re-animated archival recordings, through the creation of a new installation and audio work, including<br />
a printed distribution element and was a commissioned project for the 50-year anniversary exhibition of Modern Art Oxford – KALEIDOSCOPE. Eileen Simpson and Ben White were one of four artists who were commissioned to make new works, exhibited alongside iconic works from the past exhibition programme, which returned to the gallery from across the globe.<br />
<br />
In the spirit of the 1960s project of the Modern Art Oxford (formerly The Museum of Modern Art, Oxford), to make contemporary art freely accessible to the widest audience, we produced an archive of recorded sounds – auditory traces of activity in the gallery, available for use by a future public, without restriction and beyond the scope of the current copyright term. Digitized from videotapes and audio cassettes held in the Modern Art Oxford archive - tape hiss, voices, musical notes, audience applause and shouts, recorded at previous public events, were collected together and processed using information retrieval technologies to form a new archive of sounds and the source material for a new audio work, pressed to vinyl, for exhibition. A series of live events took place on a specially assembled platform that occupied a temporary future date – on which invited collaborators ([https://soundcloud.com/konductorslab Bambooman], [https://www.facebook.com/YWMPOXFORD/ Young Women's Music Project] and [https://soundcloud.com/luttolento Lutto Lento]) reanimated archive sounds for live performance. == Source Material ==<br />
<br />
Hundreds of video and audio tapes containing thousands of hours of recordings were digitised and analysed. Each tape documenting artists’ events and talks were mined for sounds of their audiences – auditory traces of public activity in the gallery. Tape hiss, voices, musical fragments, audience shuffle and applause recorded at past public events. Incidental moments were recorded before and after events, between speakers, in the pauses before questions or during the runout of a tape left recording. These incidental moments occupy a grey zone in relationship to authorship and ownership. Our selection omitted the voices of artists such as Tony Cragg, Victor Burgin, Helen Chadwick, Marina Abramović and instead foregrounded their audiences. In addition, fragments of 45 rpm vinyl singles of chart hits recorded in 1966, popular sounds from the year the museum opened, were ripped and processed using information retrieval technologies to separate out thousands of sounds to create a bank of source materials – from saturated drum hits to the metallic vibration of a guitar string.<br />

This film, commissioned for British Art Show 8, was shot on location in the anechoic chamber – a completely echo-proof room – at the University of Southampton. It explores archival retrieval triggered by contemporary voice, and features a soundtrack composed entirely of sounds gleaned from out-of-copyright chart hit records from 1962.<br />
<br />
The artists worked with a group of local teenagers from Newtown, Southampton skilled in emceeing and spoken word performance. In the anechoic chamber – part recording booth, part performance space, part computer science laboratory – each member of the group was invited to take up the microphone and use their voice to test out and play with beats, melodies and percussive sounds. Their recorded voices were then processed using information retrieval software to match them to the copyright-expired archival sounds, retrieved from the chart hit records.<br />

The film also features archival footage of a local group performing a cover version of ‘Da Doo Ron Ron’, and recalls the history of sample culture, where musicians and producers would routinely rip sounds from commercial hits of previous generations.<br />

This film, commissioned for British Art Show 8, was shot on location in the anechoic chamber – a completely echo-proof room – at the University of Southampton. It explores archival retrieval triggered by contemporary voice, and features a soundtrack composed entirely of sounds gleaned from out-of-copyright chart hit records from 1962.<br />
<br />
The artists worked with a group of local teenagers from Newtown, Southampton skilled in emceeing and spoken word performance. In the anechoic chamber – part recording booth, part performance space, part computer science laboratory – each member of the group was invited to take up the microphone and use their voice to test out and play with beats, melodies and percussive sounds. Their recorded voices were then processed using information retrieval software to match them to the copyright-expired archival sounds, retrieved from the chart hit records.<br />

The film also features archival footage of a local group performing a cover version of ‘Da Doo Ron Ron’, and recalls the history of sample culture, where musicians and producers would routinely rip sounds from commercial hits of previous generations.<br />

Sourcing vinyl 45 rpm records of chart hits from 1962 - the last year that commercial recordings can be retreived for public use, due to recent copyright revisions - the artists have extracted over 50,000 sounds to produce a 'pubic sonic inventory'.<br />
<br />
Within the gallery, modified turntables play a new sound work assembled from the inventory of indidual notes, percussive elements and vocal snippets. The surrounding graphic fragments recall vinyl 7 inch printed paper sleeves.<br />
<br />
Auditory Learning will change and develop throughout the exhibition tour. Reassembled as part of a live event during British Art Show in Leeds, in SOuthampton it will form the soundtrack for a new film produced with a group of local teenagers.<br />

Auditory Learning is part of Eileen Simpson & Ben White's ongoing project to find and distribute out-of-copyright archvie material. Sourcing vinyl 45 rpm records of chart hits from 1962 - the last year that commercial recordings can be retreived for public use, due to recent copyright revisions - the artists have extracted over 50,000 sounds to produce a 'pubic sonic inventory'.<br />
<br />
Within the gallery, modified turntables play a new sound work assembled from the inventory of indidual notes, percussive elements and vocal snippets. The surrounding graphic fragments recall vinyl 7 inch printed paper sleeves.<br />
<br />
Auditory Learning will change and develop throughout the exhibition tour. Reassembled as part of a live event during British Art Show in Leeds, in SOuthampton it will form the soundtrack for a new film produced with a group of local teenagers.<br />
<br />
All work is copyleft livensed and available to download or cut-on-demand at openmusicarchive.org/auditorylearning.<br />
